Antique Tuscan walnut table, late 18th – early 19th century, from the cellars of an old Chianti castle

A solid walnut table built for a specific use, with a folding gate-leg base and a round tilt-top.

An uncommon table, both in construction and in purpose.

It is made of solid walnut: a dense material that has held well over time. This is not a wood used for economy.

The base is a folding gate-leg structure, supporting a round top, about 120 cm in diameter, which tilts upright.

It opens, folds, and moves: built to adapt to the space.

When closed it takes up little room; when open it becomes a proper, comfortable surface.

It comes from the Chianti area, dating between the late 18th and early 19th century, and was used in cellars as a working table: for decanting, tasting, temporary support, and everyday operations.
It was opened when needed, then folded away and set aside, among barrels, beams, and thick walls.

The construction is simple but properly executed: balanced proportions, clean joinery, a stable structure, and a comfortable height.

The top is the most telling part: it shows signs of use, but it is not worn out — no deep damage, no burns; it has held well.

The patina, developed over time, has warm, even tones and still reveals the grain of the wood clearly.

The restoration has been light and conservative: structural consolidation, cleaning, and a finish with shellac and wax. No reconstruction.

It is original, sound, and well preserved: used, but not neglected.

It is not a common piece: many country tables in Tuscany were made more economically, using softer woods. This is clearly something different.

The base is light and articulated, while the top has presence. It works well as a dining table, even in a contemporary setting, where its seemingly temporary structure contrasts with its actual solidity.

It opens when needed, folds away, and can be moved easily: it can stand at the centre or be placed aside, ready to free up space.

They have survived time, earning the right to remain.
They carry memory and truth.
Our work is to recognize them and help them continue.
