An 18th-Century Tuscan Cupboard, Defined by Barocchetto Character

Mid-18th Century Tuscan Credenza (1750–1780)

A mid-18th century Tuscan credenza, made to store and keep in order what was truly needed: vestments in a sacristy, crockery and provisions in a pantry, or account books and records in the study of a country estate.

Built with care, with a solid structure and well-balanced proportions, it is entirely made of solid gattice wood, a local poplar chosen for its strength, stability, and resistance to the whims of time.

The original two-tone patina is honest and unforced: it conceals nothing and speaks of a respectful, well-considered use, without neglect or mistreatment. A type of finish typical of central Italy, especially Tuscany and Umbria, where tonal contrast was used to give character and visual strength to furniture even in the absence of elaborate decoration.

The two doors feature an unusual side-hinged construction, a practical solution designed to allow full opening and unobstructed access to the entire interior. The upper frame of the doors is shaped with a pronounced curve, characteristic of the Barocchetto taste of the period.

The piece is entirely original and well preserved.

Restoration work focused on structural consolidation, the removal of later paint layers without compromising the “skin” of the wood, the sanitisation of the interior, and the necessary anti-parasitic and antifungal treatments.

The final hot wax finish nourished the wood and enhanced its natural tones, preserving the overall authenticity of the piece.

A credenza that is rustic yet refined, with a front defined by the bold curves of its shaped panels, it does not go unnoticed. It has a strong presence and the ability to give identity and rhythm to a space. It works equally well as a focal piece in a traditional setting or as a contrasting element in a contemporary interior. A solid, authentic piece of furniture that does not seek effects, yet achieves them naturally.
