1685 Dynastic Print: A Historic Work of Charm and Prestige

Paper print depicting a dynastic map of royal succession, representing a series of 81 portraits of Spanish rulers, from Ataulfo to Charles II, who reigned at the time of its creation. Each portrait is executed with great attention to detail and accompanied by information such as the sovereign’s name, years of reign, and other significant notes.

The Latin inscription at the top, "Series chronologia et imagines regum Hispaniae ab Ataulpho ad Carolum II feliciter regnantem summa cura et diligentia ex probatissimis auctoribus, numismatibus ac picturis expressae," indicates that the work represents a chronological series of Spanish sovereigns, based on authoritative sources such as ancient coins and paintings to ensure historical accuracy.

At the bottom right, the inscription "Cirius Ferrius. Romanus Delin. Jacobus de Rubeis Romanus sculp. Romae sumptibus et typis Ioanneis Jacobi de Rubeis Romae, MDCLXXXV, cum Privilegio Pontificis" indicates that the work was created in Rome in 1685, designed by Ciro Ferri and engraved by Giacomo de Rossi. Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, a renowned Roman printer, obtained the "Papal Privilege" for this print, signifying the Church’s approval—a notable detail for works of that time.

This map, created using a copperplate engraving technique, measures 195 x 113 cm. It is in fair condition but requires some consolidation to reattach parts of the paper to the supporting canvas.

This authentic and rare piece, of considerable prestige, combines visual impact and cultural value. Displayed in a study, living room, or office, it is not only a historical testament to the Spanish monarchy but also becomes the focal point of any setting. Its large dimensions add a touch of prestige and personality, capturing attention in both classic and modern spaces, where it creates a fascinating contrast between past and present.
