The Kitchen Door

This door comes from an Umbrian–Tuscan farmhouse from the early 1700s. It was the kitchen door—the room where, in rural houses, the day began and ended. It was the most lived‑in space in the house, and its door simply had to do its job: open, close, and keep doing so for decades.

Made in fir, it is rural joinery built with measure. Simple, but well proportioned by the standards of its time. The two framed panels on the front are enough to give it balance without chasing effect. Here, elegance is not decoration: it is sound practical judgement.

Over time, the deep green limewash stopped being just a colour and became part of the material. It is not uniform: it carries marks and small losses left by use. It is probably not the first coat, but one of the later ones—back when repainting a door was simply a normal gesture in the life of the house. That is precisely what makes it so believable: nothing has been “done up”, only time leaving its trace.

The long iron strap hinges, set directly on wall‑fixed pivots, and the characteristic “catorcio” latch immediately show how doors like these were hung and used. On the back, the vertical boards remain—plain, robust, with nothing superfluous.

The signs of time are those of a door kept in service, not of an object forgotten. It is a difference you can recognise at once. Original, never restored and well preserved, it can be brought back into use with a conservation‑minded restoration, without altering its material and character.

Three centuries ago it opened onto the kitchen. Today it can open onto a contemporary home. The way of living has changed, but not the gesture.
