Venetian Pine Cupboard, Late 18th Century – “Lacca Povera” Finish
A modest cupboard born in the rural Veneto at the end of the 18th century, built in solid pine and shaped with the quiet practicality of everyday life.
Its shallow body was meant to hold what served the household—plates, linens, small provisions. The slightly chamfered front corners echo a local habit of the time, a simple gesture that softened the form without adding decoration. Two doors and a lower drawer complete a structure created to be useful before anything else.
The piece has survived intact and sincere. Its restoration was measured and respectful: the structure reinforced, the surface cleaned, the touch-up discreet. It still bears its original “lacca povera”—a modest faux-marble finish on a pale linen ground, mixed with earth pigments, vinegar and animal glue. An uneven, matte skin, tender in its colours, born to imitate marble with the means of a humble house.
It once lived in kitchens and passage rooms, where things were handled daily and nothing was superfluous.
Today it brings warmth and authenticity to rustic, country or contemporary interiors, standing out with its quiet presence. A small piece of folk furniture that speaks softly, well-proportioned and ready for use—true to the spirit of the place from which it comes.
