Pair of Travertine Vases – Tuscany, Second Half of the 19th Century
Solid yet elegant, this pair of hand-carved travertine vases dates back to Tuscany in the second half of the 19th century. They originate from the garden of a manor house in the Sienese countryside, overlooking the Chianti hills.
The travertine, with its earthy hues and irregular grain, has preserved the marks of time. The rim, adorned with simple pod motifs, reflects a sober yet refined taste, typical of the outdoor furnishings of noble residences.
The ample and slender shape was not merely decorative: these vases were designed to host ornamental plants and to define the scenic layout of the garden, marking symmetries, perspectives, and access points. They served both decorative and functional purposes, intended to endure and to be prominently displayed.
These are original pieces, in excellent condition. They were not mere flower containers: they marked an entrance, framed a staircase, and welcomed guests even before the threshold.
Today, with their antique charm, they remain vibrant objects, ready to find a place in a new landscape.
