Early 20th-century Umbrian cupboard

Early 20th-century Umbrian cupboard

Crafted in fir wood with early-generation plywood panels — a technical innovation at the time that offered greater lightness and structural stability — this piece is a genuine example of Umbrian rural craftsmanship.

Faithful to its original function, it retains the classic layout of traditional kitchen cupboards: a lift-up top supported by a wooden arm, opening onto a spacious compartment once used to store bread and dough, and a lower section fitted with two drawers and two paneled doors, ideal for keeping utensils, cloths, and small household linens.

Entirely original and carefully restored, it has been cleaned, reinforced, and finished with traditional shellac and wax, a treatment that enhances its warm tones and authentic character.

A cupboard like this is more than just storage: it is a silent witness to an essential way of life, where every gesture had meaning, and every object had its rightful place.

Today, thanks to its excellent condition, it can return to daily use — whether in a rustic kitchen, a country home, or even a more contemporary setting — as an honest and functional presence.
