Open-back pine bookcase – Umbria, late 19th century
Umbrian open-back bookcase, dating from the second half of the 19th century, made of solid pine. Originally designed as a wall-mounted shelving unit – with the wall itself serving as the back – it likely formed part of the furnishings of a shop, general store, or pharmacy of the time.
Functional and utilitarian by nature, it has been carefully restored to regain its full dignity of use without compromising its history. It was reinforced, fitted with a new wooden back panel to make it freestanding, stripped of its old varnishes, and finally repainted with a hand-applied tempera finish in a warm clay grey with a subtle blue undertone, featuring a lightly aged patina to lend it a lived-in and authentic appearance.
Rescued from decay and brought back to its purpose, this bookcase is now ready for a new life: sturdy, spacious, and versatile, it can grace domestic interiors with its antique charm, adding a touch of romance and carrying with it the industrious memory of a bygone era.
