Empire-Style Psyche Mirror in Mahogany and Gilt Bronze
Elegant "psyche" mirror crafted in early 19th-century Paris, made of mahogany wood with finely chiseled gilt bronze appliqués featuring foliate motifs, typical of the neoclassical aesthetic.
The oval mirror is supported by a free-standing structure with two columns crowned by torch-shaped finials—an ornamental element often found in Empire style, symbolizing prosperity and immortality. The base rests on four gently curved legs, light and graceful in form. The tilting mechanism, operated by brass side pivots, allows the angle of the mirror to be adjusted, combining practical use with stylistic harmony.
The piece is entirely original in all its parts and has been carefully restored, with full respect for the materials, patinas, and proportions of the period.
During the Empire period (1804–1815), the psyche mirror—named after the French psyché—became a true status symbol, typically placed in the boudoirs and bedrooms of aristocratic residences. Designed to provide a full-length reflection and assist with personal grooming, it was valued as much for its elegance as for its practicality: the tilting, free-standing frame allowed for easy placement and versatile use within any interior.
A refined furnishing piece, ideal for enriching a space with an element of historical charm, precise craftsmanship, and strong visual impact.
